Abbona Anna Maria

Anna Maria Abbona was one of the first women to run a wine business in the Langhe region, starting in 1989. After studying and working in the arts, she returned home and, alongside her husband Franco Schellino, began to take care of the business and the wine. There were many difficulties, in addition to those related to gender: the winery was located in a historic vineyard area, but it was very high and isolated, considered to be at the limit of wine production due to its altitude. Furthermore, it was an area that produced a wine considered “minor,” Dolcetto di Dogliani, now Dogliani DOCG. Not only Dolcetto, over the years Anna Maria and Franco have grown the business by acquiring land and vineyards and planting new vines: the common thread has always been the same: to seek out the best land for the wine project, always at altitude and with good ventilation. Today, the business has around 20 hectares of land, spread over three different areas of the Langhe: the upper part of Farigliano for Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Riesling, and Nascetta; Marsaglia for Pinot and Chardonnay (Alta Langa); and Monforte d’Alba for Barolo, where the winery dedicated exclusively to Barolo and hospitality, Cascina Bricco San Pietro, is located on the summit of Bricco San Pietro. After a lifetime of work and with the addition of his two sons Federico and Lorenzo, the philosophy that guides the company remains the same: consistency, terroir, altitude, and a lot of manual labor.
Starting July 1, 2024, the winery opened its second location, which is situated at Località Manzoni 2/A in Monforte d’Alba.
