Roero DOCG: Nebbiolo north of the Tanaro river

History and origins

The Roero DOCG takes its name from the historic Roero family, who dominated these lands in the Middle Ages on the left bank of the Tanaro River, opposite the Langhe. This territory, characterized by sandy hills and steep slopes, has always favored viticulture, giving rise to highly expressive wines.

After achieving DOC recognition in 1985, Roero was granted DOCG status in 2004, cementing its international reputation for quality.

Production area

The Roero DOCG production area lies entirely within the province of Cuneo, including the municipalities of Canale, Corneliano d’Alba, Monticello d’Alba, Monteu Roero, and neighboring towns. The sandy soil imparts an elegant and aromatic character, distinguishing these wines from those of the nearby Langhe.

Organoleptic characteristics

Made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes, Roero DOCG has a ruby-red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it expresses intense notes of red fruits, dried rose, sweet spices, and subtle balsamic hints. On the palate, it is harmonious and structured, with soft tannins and a pleasant mineral freshness. It must age for at least 20 months, including six months in wood, and can be designated “Riserva” after at least 32 months of refinement.

Additional Geographical Mentions (MGA)

Anche per il Roero DOCG sono state individuate 134 Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive che valorizzano la diversità dei singoli vigneti e la loro influenza sulle caratteristiche finali del vino, sottolineando il forte legame con il territorio.
