Cherasco, city of art and history in the heart of the Langhe
Via Vittorio Emanuele, 79, Cherasco, CN, Italia
See the map

The city of Cherasco, is located 288 meters above sea level, on the river terrace formed by the Stura di Demonte and the Tanaro, has 8,422 inhabitants. It was born on 12 November 1243 by the will of the Municipality of Alba and the vicar of Frederick II, Manfredi Lancia; still retains the structure “castrum romanum”: a square plan with streets that intersect in parallel and perpendicular. It has wide streets, arcades and many civil and religious buildings of medieval and baroque age. Cherasco was of the Angevins, then of the Visconti and at the mercy of the Spaniards and the French in the first half of the ‘500, until it passed definitively to the Savoy (1559). In 1630 the war broke out and this time the plague spread throughout Piedmont; The court and its entourage were hosted by Cherasco, immune from contagion. The following year the plenipotentiaries of Austria, France, Spain, Mantua and Monferrato stayed in Cherasco, Cardinal Mazzarino and King Vittorio Amedeo I who signed the peace that put an end to the war for the succession of Mantua and Monferrato. In 1706 the court, which had withdrawn from Turin besieged by the French, stayed again in Cherasco. In 1796 was signed the armistice between Vittorio Amedeo III and France that meant the definitive defeat of the Savoy state and the delivery of Cherasco to Napoleon. An illustrious and important history, which made it protagonist for centuries.

To see the church of San Martino, built in Romanesque forms between the thirteenth and fourteenth century, and the church of San Pietro, the oldest and most important of the town, which preserves an interesting Romanesque facade. To note the Palazzo Salmatoris frescoed by Taricco and residence of the Savoia, in which Napoleon dictated the surrender to Vittorio Amedeo III, which hosts numerous art exhibitions. In the seventeenth-century Palazzo Gotti of Salerano there is also the Civic Museum “Giovan Battista Adriani”. We also mention the Belvedere arch, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the People and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Graces. You can also take a walk on the ramparts of ‘500, with splendid views of the Langhe and
on the Alps, which ends near the Visconteo Castle (private residence, not to be visited).

Do not miss the typical Baci di Cherasco, chocolate confetti born in 1881 and produced with toasted hazelnuts of the Langhe and dark chocolate. The Barolo Mantoetto; the Robiola De.C.O. of goat; the snail in all its declinations; the Roreto Frog of Cherasco and the Sausage to the barolo. L’Acqua di Cherasco, collection of fragrances for the environment dedicated to the city.

Not to be missed are the historic antiques and collectibles markets.
