History of Diano

The name of the town – Diano – makes think of the Goddess of the hunt of the ancient Romans and Ligurians, valiant hunters and primitive peoples of these lands, before the apostolic preaching of S. Paul, S. Barnaba, S. Restituto, S. Frontiniano and S. Cassiano, who propagated Christianity here.
The Romans did not have great temples and worshipped their Gods in open country, especially in sacred woods, where silence and mystery were greatest.

‘ It is historical that, just around Alba extended the divine woods; that of Diana, on the hill where now stands the town of Diano.
The opinion that Diana had a special cult here, is proved by the fact that at the entrance of the village on the left of the provincial Alba-Diano and about fifty meters from the gallery, there exists in the rock side, an edicola or temple, with the dedication to Diana: “For ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.” By act of 5 May 1392 the antipope Clement VII of Savoy, donated Diano to Amedeo VI of Savoy. Most probably in these years the Castle of Diano, one of the strongest of the Albese, which suffered serious damage in 1412 due to the cruel factions of those times.
