It ended with general enthusiasm the fifth edition of Io, Barolo – la nuit. More than thirty were the Barolo producers who, Saturday May 27th, personally presented their labels in the evocative evening set of the Castle of Roddi, to a diverse public coming from all the country (Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Veneto, Tuscany, Lazio) and from abroad (many were the foreigners from Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the United States of America).
A relaxed and informal “all you can drink” of Barolo gave the wine lovers the opportunity to taste the 2013 vintage of several labels produced by Fratelli Alessandria, Cascina Amalia, Boasso, Bric Cenciurio, Broccardo, Cadia, Cagliero, Cascina del Monastero, Cascina Sòt, Ciabot Berton, Costa di Bussia Tenuta Arnulfo, Crissante Alessandria, Diego Morra, Diego Pressenda La Torricella, Franco Conterno, Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno, Gian Piero Marrone, Gigi Rosso, Josetta Saffirio, La Biòca, Le Strette, Marchesi di Barolo, Monchiero, Negretti, Olivero Mario, Palladino, Podere Ruggeri Corsini, Rizieri, Silvano Bolmida, Sordo, Sukula, Terre del Barolo.
The event was organized by the association Strada del Barolo e grandi vini di Langa, with the contribution of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo, under the patronage of Associazione per il Patrimonio dei Paesaggi Vitivinicoli di Langhe-Roero e Monferrato and thanks to the cooperation of Comune and Pro Loco of Roddi and Turismo in Langa.
Here the comment made by Lorenzo Olivero, president of the association: «We are all extremely satisfied and so are the producers, which is what counts more. In fact, they appreciated the new structure of the event: for the first time they could directly interact with the public in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. As a producers myself, I could notice the presence of a very skilled and really interested public. Moreover, many of those who attended the previous edition, confirmed they liked the new structure of the event too».
The director Daniele Manzone added: «What mainly identify Io, Barolo is its innovative spirit: even if it is a top class event, Barolo is celebrated in a friendly way that is open to everybody…. Not like those boring presentations that only experts of the sector are able to understand. In particular, I am really satisfied for what concerns the side events (Barolo Orienteering organized by Wine Zone and the two Wine Tasting Experiences® matched with the raw ham of Cuneo), because they fully express our capability of storytelling on wine, involving and enchanting all the participants».
In piazza Umberto I, for the entire night, other wines of Langa were served, paired with a selection of traditional products of the territory: raw meat prepared by Proloco di Roddi, seasoned sausage on the go made by Agrisalumeria Luiset, small ravioli with a filling of ricotta cheese and a sauce of tomatoes and basil prepared by the restaurant La Crota; rice salad with rice of three different colours (in the varieties Ermes, Venus and Apollo) prepared by Strada del Riso vercellese di qualità; dishes of cheese by Consorzio per la tutela del Formaggio Robiola di Roccaverano paired with fruit preserve by La Cucina di Pina; glasses of strawberries prepared by Proloco di Roddi; rice pastiera by Strada del Riso vercellese di qualità; “Acquolìni”,“Linguacce” and Baci di Dama by Il Germoglio dei Sapori.
Great success also for the Wine Tasting Experience® hosted by the sommelier Sando Minella with the tasting of a selection of Piedmontese wines paired with top quality food productions, and for “Barolo Orienteering” guided by Andrea Zarattini of Wine Zone. Both the meetings were sold out.

Monday May 1st 2017 a fun experience hunting for clues in the heart of the Barolo Wine Route starting from the “capital” of the Langhe!
The format is that of a traditional treasure hunt, but with a difference: the itinerary, along which participants unearth clues, passes through a territory unique in the world, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A slow hunt…
The hunting journey shall be carried out by car or motorcycle, to allow participants to visit a large part of the Langhe region. But – very important! – It will not be a timed race: the aim is to spend a day in good company, to discover the territory and its precious resources, without “competing” to arrive first. The Treasure Hunt has to be enjoyed more than played, with the game’s search aspect acting as a means for discovery.
The Hunt will be structured so that the participating teams can be distributed across multiple routes, homogeneous in character, pleasantness, and length. The legs will allow everyone to have fun and excitement according to their own taste, for both wine lovers and families with children alike.
The Rules
The hunters will gather between 10.00am and 11.00am in Alba, piazza Medford (in front of “Palazzo Mostre e Congressi”): there, the teams (by car or motorcycle) will be registered and each will receive the kit to join the hunt. From the starting point, the teams will leave in search of their first clue, hidden among the stands of Vinum, Alba.
From there on, it will be a continuous movement between the hills and vine rows along the Barolo Wine Route: at every leg of the hunt, participants will receive the clue leading to the next, and it will be necessary to earn it, sometimes passing a simple test linked to the place, other times having it revealed by someone, and others by searching for it in the nearby area. Each test will give each team a score, adding up to a final ranking: the last stage will see the teams converge in the late afternoon (approximately around 6.00pm), for the final leg and the discovery of a number of awards such as wines, traditional products, accommodation and dinners in the territory facilities, to continue the enjoyment a bit longer.
Lunch
Langhe has no shortage of places to eat, from restaurants to wineries: you will find several on your path. Discover them on www.stradadelbarolo.it
How to participate
The registration costs 55 euro per team (a team consists of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 people per car/camper) or 35 euro for motorcycle riders (a motorcycle-team consists of a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 2 people per motorcycle/bike). Register now!

“Albergo Etico” was founded in 2009, thanks to a happy intuition of a group of friends and professionals eager to make their contribution to improve the society they live in. Driven by a specific need, that was their desire to help a boy with Down syndrome to complete his educational path with a traineeship, they identify first a restaurant, and then a hotel, as the ideal place to share expertise and moments of professional and personal growth.
In that same period, the Scuola di Formazione Colline Astigiane was looking for a traineeship for one of its students, Nicolò, to help him get his school diploma. Chef Antonio De Benedetto, a former student of the same institute, immediately accepted the proposal made by the Director of the school, Mrs. Barbarino. It was an unpretentious traineeship of a few weeks, a sort of bureaucratic procedure, with modest results.
But for Nicolo it was much more. Today, that same trainee is the symbol of a restaurant, a movement, a process that is transforming the city of Asti, and not just it. Today, he has the keys of the restaurant, he has friends and he lives by himself. And, what’s more important: he has a regular employment contract and he carries out tutoring activities for other guys. Nicolo took Albergo Etico to European Parliament in Brussels, to the Quirinal to meet President Napolitano, to the Vatican, where he shook hands with Pope Francis, to the Piedmont Region, where he was awarded by President Cota and Chiamparino. Thanks to the press, the TV and the radio, as well as to some major sports and food events, Nicolo and his colleagues have become the symbol the desire to change and live an active life.
The tourism sector, as demonstrated by the project implemented by Associazione Albergo Etico, is a privileged channel for the employment of people with intellectual disabilities. Hotel, with their reception, offices, restaurants, bars, breakfast rooms, kitchens and staff rooms a microcosm, the ideal place to learn new things and how to live with other people. The work includes both front office and back office activities, some in direct contact with customers, while others requires individual tasks, and this is important, because it help develop different skills. We called it “Accademia dell’Indipendenza”: a three-year training/work program at Albergo Etico.
It is a gradual process, through which people learn to carry out all the activities of a hotel and a restaurant (artificial nest) to replicate them in a family context (their own nest). 3 years are enough to learn how to live an independent life. These guys sleep in the staff rooms, to cut the umbilical cord with their family and learn how to live with their peers. This makes them more responsible. Here there are no assistants and/or educators, but only co-workers, helping each other.
