In Vino Veritas
“In vino veritas”: maybe it is for this ancient saying that the Association “Gruppo Italiano di Cardiologia Riabilitativa e Preventiva” (GICR-IACPR, Italian group for cardiac prevention and rehabilitation) chose to start a partnership with Consorzio grandi vini del Piemonte e terre del Barolo, a consortium of noble Piemontese wines. One of the missions of GICR-IACPR is to promote cardiovascular health both in healthy people (primary prevention) and in those already affected by cardiovascular diseases (secondary prevention). In order to do this, besides providing tips on lifestyle, it is essential to sensitize and educate citizens and patients on the importance of eating properly.
They think that good advice is better perceived than strict prohibition and we all firmly believe that a healthy and balanced diet can be easily adopted when it is pleasant and tasty and not when it is monotonous, rigid, without taste and fragrance. Therefore, the association GICR-IACPR have started promoting good food that is good for the body.
It is crucial to make the patients understand that the secrets of a good diet are variety, quality and above all quantity. In order to promote the philosophy of eating both healthy and well, at the same time, the website of GICR-IACPR as the one of the Associazione Nazionale Cardiologi Ospedalieri, (ANMCO, the National Association of hospital cadiologists) is often enriched with appetizing recipes that aim to remind that it is not true that what is good is also bad; on the contrary the right quantity, as it is for medicine, is the goal to pursue. In this educational perspective, considering, among the others, the positive effects of the phytoalexin resveratrol contained in red grapes, on the cardiovascular system and knowing the role of the good wine as an added value to a delicious meal, we decided to promote a cooperation with the prestigious Piedmontese wines which fully respond to the requirements above mentioned, also because 70% of them are red wines. The knowledge and the moderate consumption of good wines can not but discourage the use and abuse of products that are low in quality but high in alcoholic percentage, since they damage and imbalance a proper diet. We would also like to remind that also for the demonized “fat” that often is included in one group of nutriments to ban, it is easy to understand how a moderate daily consumption of extra virgin olive oil can not be compared to the consumption of saturated fat fried or with doubtful origin. Both kinds of fat are part of the vast lipid family, but while the first forms the basis of the Mediterranean diet and has positive effects on the body as well as a huge role in the preparation of tasty recipes, the second should not be recommended if not occasionally and in very low quantities.
Exactly because alcoholic drinks are not all the same and that the right quantity is the key, the aim is to promote a culture of “responsible” drinking, or in other words, drinking the right quantity and matching it with good and healthy food. With this and other cooperations with renowned food and wine domestic products we want to go on with our “mission” promoting a healthy lifestyle based on a healthy diet, regular exercise and no smoking.
